Coolest Blue Angel Aircraft Carrier Cake

My son was having a party around the theme of all things “Navy”, so I was glad he wanted a cake to look like an aircraft carrier, and not a plane flying or something like that! I baked 2 1/4 sheet cakes in a heavy chocolate cake, filled and layered all the cakes and then started cutting out pieces. I made a template up ahead of time to know about where I should cut out, just to give it a rough shape. I then crumb coated it with a thin layer of icing and let it sit in the cooler overnight to make it easier to frost the next day. The tower on the deck of the ship is all cake and I skewered it through the middle to hold it up, that was hard to frost though! I piped on as much decoration as I could, and even let my son help with some of it. The little airplanes were made of chocolate, and done in a mold about a week prior and just kept in the freezer. (although, they can be kept out on the counter too, you just have to use candy melts) I didnt have a board to fit this cake, so I covered a broiler pan with some cake foil. There are little cupcakes around this cake too, and they had regular planes on them, my son only wanted “blue angels” on deck of the ship. He and his friends really liked it!!
