Homemade Bowling Ball and Bowling Pin Cake

Homemade Bowling Ball and Bowling Pin Cake

My daughter celebrated her 7th birthday at a bowling alley. After researching online, I found this Bowling Ball and Bowling Pin Cake idea. I was very happy with how it turned out and so was my daughter, which is all that mattered.

Make a template for the bowling pin and be sure the bottom is big enough to hold the bowl cake on top. I traced around the bowl and went up from there. I used three boxed cake mixes and 3 containers of white icing and 2 containers of chocolate icing. I made 2 13x9 cakes and one bowl cake.

For the bowl cake I used a Pyrex bowl to bake it in. Be sure to spray the bowl with cooking spray prior to baking and bake for approximately 55 minutes. Once they are baked, be sure to cool them in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. This makes it easier to cut and spread the icing.

Turn them upside down so you have a nice flat surface on top. Cut a portion of one 13x9 cake and add it to the bottom of the other 13x9 to make it the length you want the pin to be. Lay your template on top of the cakes and cut the shape out. You can now ice the pin white with a crumb layer and return to the fridge for a few hours or overnight.

Follow the same instructions with the bowl cake. After the crumb layers have set, you can put the bowl cake on and add another layer of icing on both pieces. I used Fruit by the Foot for the red stripes at the top and Necco candies for the finger holes. I recommend putting wax paper underneath the cake until you're done frosting to keep any drips from messing up your platter. It slides out easily after you're done.

What size of the Pyrex bowl did you use? Was it the smallest one or the second to the smallest one? I have them, never thought about "baking" with them! I would love to try and do a bowling cake for my son's birthday coming up.
Thank you so much!

Sincerely,

Vanessa
