Homemade Calculator Cake

Homemade Calculator Cake

My son LOVES numbers, and one of his favorite toys is a calculator! So, for his fourth birthday, I wanted to make him a homemade calculator cake. As you might imagine, there are not a lot of calculator cake ideas out there. I did find a couple on this site to give me some inspiration.

I just used a box cake mix and I baked a 9x12 cake and a loaf pan. I cut the loaf in half diagonally to make the raised screen portion of the calculator. For frosting, I used the basic Wilton buttercream recipe and tinted it blue. After frosting, I used chocolate candy bars broken into pieces for the buttons and wrote the numbers, etc. on with icing.

I wanted something smooth that actually looked similar to the screen on a real calculator, but I couldn't find any fruit "roll-up" or fruit leather that was gray. So, I made my own. After searching on the internet for a recipe, I mixed strained applesauce and a little black food coloring together, and smoothed it out on a cookie sheet. I dried it in a low temperature oven. Then I cut it into a rectangle shape and laid in on the cake for the screen.

I then wrote with black icing "Luke = 4" in the font style of a calculator and on the sides 4 + 4 - 4 x 4 / 4 = 4. I was pleased with the way it turned out, and Luke had a wonderful numbers birthday!

I'm looking for a physics calculator that shows like a graph on the cake. Are there any photos of a more complex cake? :S

Thanks.

I really like this one. Especially the screen. Your penmanship with frosting is fabulous. I like the idea of using broken chocolate bars for buttons. Genius and tasty!
