Fun Homemade Camping Scene Cake

My partner is a keen camper and we like to camp in quite out the way places. This cake is a Dundee cake (his favourite) and because of the effect I want to create I iced it the risen side up to get a bumpy ‘rough ground effect’. I used some apricot jam and then iced it and the board in green fondant using the all in one method.

This camping cake was a great fun cake to make as I could really personalize it. The tent I made using a cardboard template and used a 50/50 mix of petal paste and fondant, I cheated a bit and left the cardboard template in place. I then made the end of a sleeping bag and stuck his little feet out of the door.

We like to camp in places we can have camp fires so I included a campfire and some cooking equipment and mug, which I wrote his name on. The pitch number was made with a cocktail stick and piece of paper and it was 42 as that was his age.

All the accessories were made with modelling paste and the river was made with blue royal icing and then dusted with the pearlised petal dust to make it look like water.
