Homemade Candy Barbie Princess Cake

I wanted to make a Candy Barbie Princess Cake like those cute ones I see at the grocery store but didn't want to pay that not so cute price at the stores either. I searched the web for inspiration and found several wonderful cakes here at coolest-birthday-cakes.com that made me feel I could do it too.

I shopped for a bowl that was shaped well enough to give the dress top size. I found a ceramic one that looked great but needed another two layer 9 inch cake below it to keep the height level with the doll I wrapped in cling wrap. I had to improvise when using the ceramic bowl to bake a cake because it was too difficult to bake all the way through. I inserted a heavy glass into the center and that seemed to do the trick.

Since I don't really have a steady hand for piping, I inserted various candy in different ways and patterns to make the details in the dress. It got a little banged up while driving the cake to the party since hubby didn't pack it like I asked but thankfully, it's taste wasn't damaged ... and my lil girl LOVED it as everyone oohed and ahhhhed at it come cake time.
