Coolest Captain Rex Mask Cake

For my son’s 9th birthday we decided to go with a Clone Wars theme. We made a Captain Rex Mask cake from a 9×13 chocolate cake. We carved the elevated pieces out of an 8″ round. We used a mask template for all of the shapes and pieces.

We covered it in chocolate frosting and then made some marshmallow fondant and laid it over the entire thing and smoothed out the fondant to define the shapes underneath.

Next we colored the fondant black and blue from the Wilton icing coloring and cut the mask details from those. For the yellow lines on the side of the cake I took lemon frosting and added extra yellow food coloring and just free-handed it on.

It all turned out so great! He really liked it too!

  3. This is awesome! Great pics and instructions, my 6 yo wants a captain Rex cake this year, he has a nut allergy and the nut- free bakery wanted $150 for something very similar to this! I am so psyched to be able to afford to make it for him!
