Coolest Carebear Birthday Cake

This Carebear Birthday Cake was a dense, moist chocolate mud cake. The first cake was two 8.5″ round tin layered cakes and the second (shorter) cake was a 10″ round tin single layer. The third cake (rainbow) was a 9″ round tin with a hole in the middle. I cut this cake in half and stood them together to make the rainbow shape.

The frosting is Wilton’s Crusting Buttercream recipe which is great for the “paper towel smoothing effect”. The colour is Capri Blue which was a gel base food colouring so the frosting did not get watered down. I used the whole bottle of gel to get the rich blue effect. The clouds were piped on from uncoloured buttercream frosting.

The stars and hearts and lettering were made from pre-coloured fondant cut out using my daughter’s play-doh cutters. The Carebear toys can be bought on eBay. The slide was made out of Twizlers (coloured liquorice).

I have never decorated a cake before so I spend a few weeks learning how to pipe by watching youtube demonstrations. My 5 year old was thrilled to bits and was a huge hit at her party – it fed over 50 guests.
