Cool Homemade Cars 2 Cake

I made this Cars 2 Cake for my son’s 5th birthday. He is a massive Cars fan and what better than the new Cars 2 movie for his birthday cake?

It is a rectangle 12 inch Victoria sponge with raspberry jam + butter cream and covered with white sugarpaste. I placed it on a larger 14 inch board to give extra space to place the car characters around and covered that with sugarpaste too, and used a crimper at the edges to give a more professional finish. I used a chequered flag ribbon around the cake to give a good racing effect and hide the edge at the bottom of the cake and used a plain white ribbon around the cake board to give a clean finsih.

I made all the cars individually by hand from sugarpaste in the base colour of each character and then hand painted on the body work of each specific car – it took approx 6 hours in total just to paint the body work!! I spent approx 2 hours each night using books and comics and the Disney website to make sure the paintwork was just right!! I used superwhite powder mixed with a little water to whiten the eye areas of the charcters and normal sugar flair colouring paste mixed with a little water to paint the paint work. I made all these about a week before the cake itself to allow to thourough drying time. I glued them all into position with some royal icing as he had a to go over a lot of speed bumps on the way to the party venue.

Then I cheated with the happy birthday and number candles.

This is the most complex and time consuming cake I have ever attempted but it was worth every minute to see my son’s face light up. Hope you like it!
