Homemade Castle Birthday Cake

My son wanted a knights and castles birthday party when he turned 5. I spent some time looking at pictures on the internet and then combined the best ideas to make this Castle Birthday Cake.

I used a 9x12 for the bottom and a circle pan for the top layer. At the corners and at the top are 5 cupcakes (I used metallic liners for a sparkly look). I outlined the "moat" using some kind of chocolate covered graham cookie. The "water" is edible blue sparkles from the craft store.

The frosting is just buttercream that I dyed a light brown. The drawbridge is made from a chocolate bar and licorice. The windows are made out of white chocolate bars. The square chocolates are Hershey Treasures and each of the cupcakes has a sugar ice cream cone on it.

I piped on the windows (on the cones) with those little tubes and made the flags with toothpicks and cut up fruit roll-ups.

My son loved this and everyone was quite impressed.
