Homemade Castle Fortress Cake

Homemade Castle Fortress Cake

My niece wanted a birthday castle cake, but didn't want it to be too "girly", more like Medieval castle fortress cake style. I made 2 12-inch square cakes and 1 10-inch square. I stacked the 2 12-inch squares and cut a quarter-circle out of each corner.

Then I took 4 flat ice cream cones, put one upside-down in each corner, frosted like crazy. Next I put 4 flat ice cream cones right-side-up on top of the bottom cones, again frosted like crazy. I anchored the top cones by pushing grilling skewers all the way through to the bottom. I cut the 10-inch square into 4 strips to create the wall around the top. It's also anchored on with skewers.

To create the crenelation around the top, I used sugar cubes and piped frosting all over them. The stone/brick effect was created using a Wilton #150 tip, just piping short pieces in horizontal lines like brick shapes. We made ladders using uncooked spaghetti, broken into smaller pieces and glued together, then propped them up on the cake. The drawbridge is made out of part of a Hershey chocolate bar.

Thank you so much for showing the world your amazing cake! I made one today for a project but it doesn't look like a "castle". Your advice is going to make it the best looking medieval castle in school. Thanks a bunch(;
