Sweet Homemade Calico Cat Cake

This is a Calico Cat Cake that I made for my daughter’s 8th birthday.

I baked several large flat cakes and basically “cut and pasted” pieces together to form the cat’s body. I “glued” the pieces together with homemade cream cheese icing and used skewers to hold the ears in place and legs to the body. Wilton colored icing tubes were used to decorate. I used Wilton tip #233 for the fur (this tip is also great for hair and grass.

Around the nose and eyes I put icing and patted flat with cornstarch on my finger. It gives the look of fondant, but works great when you only need a small amount. The whiskers are chocolate licorice and the nose is a molded piece of Starburst.

I use a lot of molds, but love making free-form cakes.

The cake was a huge hit and something my daughter can remember for a long time.
