Sweet Homemade Caterpillar Birthday Cake for a 1st Birthday Party

I saw this Caterpillar Birthday Cake on another website and fell in love with it so I made it for my daughter’s first birthday party. I liked this design because I was expecting a lot of guests and this cake could easily be elongated (or shortened) if I felt we needed more (or less) cake to serve our guests.

I used boxed mixes and baked each segment in a round, oven-safe bowl approx 6” wide. When each segment was cooled, I cut off the raised top and inverted it so it had a smooth, flat surface to lay on and the uniform, round surface was showing. I iced it with homemade buttercream icing dyed to the colors of my choosing. Then I put each segment together on the tray and lined them up where I wanted them.

The feet are gummy wedges, the mouth is Twizzler’s Pull-n-Peel, the eyes and nose are Skittles, and the antennae is made of floral wire shaped and wrapped in black ribbon with mini marshmallows at the ends. I made the letters and circles out of cut-out cookies and iced them with the same icing I used on the cake.

This cake was very easy to make and received lots of compliments.
