Homemade Caterpillar Cake

I came across so many wonderful caterpillar cake ideas on this site - I just had to make one for my daughter's first birthday party. I am SO thrilled with the results. It came out so adorable - I didn't want to cut it up.

I used the Wilton sport ball pan with boxed mixes of chocolate and yellow cakes. And I decorated it in the colors of my daughter's bedroom. It was the first time I have ever used professional cake frosting gels for color and I'll never go back to the grocery store food coloring again. They colors are so vibrant and rich!!

Then I sprinkled candies on the four body segments to look like fuzz. I used the premade frosting in an aerosol can to make the feet - really just squigglies on the cake board. The eyes are junior mints with little bits of marshmallow cut for the whites and the mouth(which ran) was just a gel frosting. The antlers are pipe cleaners.

It came out bright and fun and really cute. Better than I expected that I could do being a first timer.

It worked out nicely too that I was able to give my daughter the caterpillar head as her own cake to go to town on. And the rest of us ate the yummy and colorful body.

I hope you all try this cake at least once for a young child you know and love - it was easy and fun to make!
