Cute Homemade Caterpillar Cake for my Daughter’s 1st Birthday

I decided to make a caterpiller cake for my daughter’s 1st birthday after seeing one in magazine. I baked a number of muffin and smaller rounded shaped cakes in 2 different pans. I used 4 of the muffin cakes and 4 of the smaller cakes in making my caterpiller. The middle body part of the caterpiller is a combination of the two different cakes.

I started with the head, and made this the largest cake. The subsequent cakes were all trimmed to be slightly smaller than the previous cake. I used premade frosting and used food colouring to dye some of it yellow and pink. I iced the cakes (fairly roughly) with the frosting and then covered with coconut, which helped hide some of the imperfections. The cocount for the yellow and pink body parts was coloured by mixing some food colouring in with it in a cup.

I made the eyes with some fondant, small black pieces placed on the white of the eye. The feet are small pieces of fondant. The antennae are pieces of licorice.

I was pleased with how this cake turned out, but found it to be quite tricky to shape the cakes and ice them neatly.
