Homemade Chocolate Button Owl Cake
I was asked to make an owl for a niece so I set about looking for pictures of owl cakes on the web and found this excellent site that inspired me. I always new I'd use chocolate buttons for the feathers.
I started this Chocolate Button Owl Cake by making a round chocolate sponge sandwiched together with chocolate butter icing and then did the same with a square sponge. I cut about 1/5th off the round cake and sat it on at the top of the square sponge which I shaped at the cones slightly. I then made white chocolate butter icing which I used as the belly and placed small white choc buttons as the feathers. I then repeated this around the rest of the cake with dark choc butter icing and milk choc buttons. The large white eyes are made from royal icing.
