Homemade Circles Mickey Mouse Birthday Cake
I actually came up with the idea for this Circles Mickey Mouse Birthday Cake by first looking on the coolest-birthday-cakes.com website. I knew I'd love to do the Mickey Mouse shaped cake but wasn't really confident I could make a Mickey face. I recently learned how to make marshmallow fondant so I wanted to make it with fondant not traditional icing. (This website gives a great and tasty marshmallow recipe... Marshmallow fondant tastes way better than regular fondant you purchase or have tasted on wedding cakes. People actually want to eat this fondant.) Then I went to my local JoAnn's and saw the circle and star cut outs in different sizes for fondant and the idea for doing all different colors circles was born.
I actually made the fondant and colored it a week before my son's 2nd birthday and just left it in the fridge. (On another cake I did I made the fondant 2 weeks in advance and colored it, then kept it in the fridge and it did great - just make sure to coat it real well with Crisco and wrap in saran wrap then put in a zip lock bag.) Next I cut out the shapes about 3 days before hand and put them in Tupperware with wax paper between them, again kept them in the fridge.
Then I made the cakes (regular box cake) 2 nights before. I used Wilton 6 inch pans for the ears and a 9 inch pan for the face. So all I had to do the night before was assemble it all. I used a damp paper towel to wet the fondant cutouts on one side to stick them to the cake. It was easy and fun. I just placed them randomly until they looked right.
The stars I made when I made the other cutouts but I made them thicker and put the toothpicks in then. I didn't put the letters of my son's name on them until the night before and then left them off the cake until right before the party so they wouldn't fall over. Finally, I outlined around the bottom with icing.
This was my first cake making experience and I was so excited by how it turned out. Everyone loved it! Especially my son! He said that it was his "happy cake."
