Homemade Colon Cake
I am a nurse working in Gastroenterology so I assist with colonoscopies on a daily basis. For 'Nurses Week' a couple years ago someone suggested that I make a cake shaped like a colon. She had seen a similar one in EndoNurse magazine. I looked up their website and contacted the editor who contacted the maker of the original colon cake. I used her instructions to use three bundt pans to to construct the colon. I then hollowed out all three cakes with an apple corer and piped chocolate frosting into the colon.
I frosted entire cake with pink tinted buttercream icing after assembling into colon shape. I also decided to improve the homemade colon cake by constructing a realistic scope which I made out of Marzipan (since I had not heard of fondant at that time, which would have worked better). I added a gummy worm appendix. The cake was a huge hit for Nurses Week and our department won a pizza party.
