Cool Homemade Construction Birthday Cake Using the Cuddly Bear Wilton Pan

This Construction Birthday Cake was the very first decorated cake I attempted. I work as a construction safety specialist, and we had a dessert/cake contest at our picnic last summer. I’ve always loved to bake, so I took it one step further.

I used the Cuddly-Bear stand up mold (Wilton) and carved off the ears and muzzle to make my Safety Dude, half the ball pan (Wilton) to make the hard hat, and the Wilton Decorator Preferred® Bakeware Heating Core to make the safety cones.

The hard hat and cones are chocolate cake and the “Safety Dude” is my special vanilla cake recipe, all decorating is done with butter cream frosting – even the yellow “caution” tape strip is frosting (I used the # 789 basket weave tip with the smooth side up).

For the brim of the hard hat I over piped frosting to get depth and shape of the brim of a hard hat. For the brim of Safety Dude’s hard hat I cut a small piece of plastic from a cool whip bowl to make the shape of the brim and left about 2 inches to make a point to stick into the cake to hold it, then I piped frosting on the top and bottom using a #16 star tip.

The decorating took about 8 hours total, but it was a lot of fun and wowed everyone. We (Safety Dude and I) took first place but I did have to leave the area when someone finally wanted to taste the cake.
