Cool Homemade Construction Cake

A friend asked if I could make his friend who was a heavy equipment operator a 60th birthday cake. I tossed around some ideas in my head and this Construction Cake is what I came up with.

I baked 2 9 inch round vanilla cakes and filled them with vanilla mousse, strawberries and bananas and then iced the cake in vanilla butter cream. I airbrushed the sides of the cake yellow and orange. I piped a border and added some grass. I bought the little construction vehicles.

For the sand/dirt I crushed up some girl scout shortbread cookies and added a little bit of crushed graham crackers. I dug some of the cake up to make it look like the back hoe dug into the cake. Since they requested a yellow cake I had to dig a hole, ice the hole and put chocolate cookie crumbs in the hole to look like dirt. I put some corn syrup in the back of the dump truck and stuck candy rocks onto it to make it look as if the truck were dumping the rocks.

I found a senior crossing construction sign at the party store which I added for the “old theme”. Everyone at the party loved this cake and the birthday “boy” hahahaha was so amazed that someone took the time to make this for him.
