Easy Homemade Construction Cake

For my son’s 4th birthday party, we decided to go with a construction theme. We had lots of toy construction vehicles for inspiration but Landon wanted to include a particular toy lawnmower that he loves.

I decided to add a grassy area to include the lawnmower. I used a Wilton’s 12×18 cake pan. The “muddy” part of the cake is homemade butter cream icing mixed with cocoa powder. The road and grass are the same butter cream but with green or black coloring.

I iced the chocolate side part and then piped out the design for the road and filled it in. Then, I piped the grass (grass tip) and added yellow to the middle of the road. I made the road large enough to put the road scraper toy on top. I used an upside down cupcake, covered with chocolate icing and crushed chocolate graham cracker crumbs to be the “dirt pile”. I filled the back of the dump truck up with crushed chocolate graham cracker crumbs so it looked like it was making the dirt pile.

On the grass, I took the handle of a fork and wrote a 4 in the icing and then filled the 4 with crushed graham cracker crumbs and put the lawnmower in front, to look like it cut out the 4. I sprinkled graham cracker crumbs (chocolate) all over the muddy construction site and added a few construction vehicles and signs. We used chocolate covered raisins as ‘rocks”.

This cake was a big hit and relatively easy to make.
