My son is obsessed with diggers of all kinds. This Construction Site Birthday Cake was for his second birthday. It is a chocolate cake (from Joy of Cooking) with chocolate buttercream between the layers and on top of the top layer. The top layer is broken off, with a bulldozer and excavator “working” at the crumbs. On the top I’ve put a crane lifting pocky “logs” and a dumptruck full of chocolate sprinkles.
I made a pile of plywood out of sesame snaps and then a random pile of white chocolate squares. I used some of the broken cake to make a dirt pile on the top step. I used extra cocoa in the buttercream to make it darker and more “dirty”.
We kept out only digger toys, had a construction theme decoration set and made a “pint the scoop on the digger” game with posterboard and doublesided-tape.
