Coolest Country Fair Buttered Popcorn Cake

This is a cake I made for an entry in the local Fair this past summer. I won a blue ribbon for 1st place in the “Decorated Cake” category. I wanted to create a cake that would fit in with the fair theme. I decided to make a cake that looks like a bag of buttered popcorn.

The cake is a 5 layer vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. I smoothed the frosting by dipping the offset spatula in water. I held a piece of cardboard against the cake in strips and sprayed red food coloring to make the stripes on the popcorn bag. I used kitchen shears to cut miniature marshmallows into popped popcorn shapes. I then put yellow food coloring in some corn syrup and drizzled it on the popcorn so it would look like butter.

This was my first time entering a baking contest. I can’t wait to enter another one next summer.
