Homemade Curious George Birthday Cake

Homemade Curious George Birthday Cake

My son Chase begged for a Curious George Birthday Cake for his 3rd birthday, so I gave in and made one from scratch. I tore out a George face from one of Chase's coloring books and used a copy machine to enlarge the face to the exact size of cake I wanted.

First I made two rectangle cakes from box mixes. I made them the night before, let the cool and stored them in the fridge sealed overnight (there are a lot less crumbs to deal with when the cake is cold). The next morning I cut the tops of the cakes off to make them flat. Then I flipped them over and used the bottom for the top of the cake, less crumbs that way.

I put the two cakes together and made sure that they were the same height. Then I cut the outline of George's face using the paper copy I had made (that made it really easy). I used one can of store bought chocolate icing and one can of white icing, but then I added dye to make the white icing flesh colored.

First I frosted the face area and put it in the fridge to get cold (it is easier to layer icing when it is cold). I let it chill about 10 minutes and then piped the outline of the face. Then from the outline to the edge of the cake, I frosted with chocolate icing and put back in the fridge.

Next I drew the eyes, nose and mouth. The last thing I did was to ice the ears in flesh colored icing and pipe on the details. It took me about 2 hours to do all the icing, but it was worth it to see Chase's reaction. The only sad part was that it took me 2 hours to make and 5 minutes for people to eat!
