Cool Homemade 3 Tiered Curious George Cake

I made this Curious George cake for my son’s first birthday.

At first, I wanted to make the cake red, yellow, and blue. However, after much research and several attempts at making red fondant, I decided it would be best to go with blue and yellow as my red fondant was more fuchsia, even though I used half a jar of red coloring gel!

Other than the red coloring issue, these cakes were actually pretty easy although tedious. I made everything from scratch because the texture of the cake needed to be dense and the marshmallow fondant was so much cheaper to make. I found it quite easy as well.

After reading several recipes and watching videos, some people advise adding about 1/2 cup of Crisco to the fondant; however, I think it’s much better without it. I suggest just putting Crisco on your hands before mixing the fondant.

Marshmallow fondant recipe:

Ingredients: 16 oz marshmallows, 3 tbsp water and 2 lbs of powdered sugar.

Instructions:

– put the marshmallows and water in a bowl and microwave for about 45 seconds. If this has not melted, reheat in the microwave for about 25 more seconds

– mix marshmallows with a fork and gradually add 1 lb of the powdered sugar.

– on a clean countertop, sprinkle powdered sugar over the area that you are going to use. Take the fondant out of the bowl, and knead it, gradually adding powdered sugar until the fondant is no longer sticky. You needn’t use the entire 2 lbs of powdered sugar unless necessary.

– roll the fondant out, with a rolling pin, and place over the cake, after spreading a thin layer of buttercream icing as a base coat on the cake.

– once the fondant is smooth on the cake, use a rolling pizza cutter to trim around the bottom edge of the cake. The cutter is better than a knife, in my opinion. Use a very thin needle to get any bubbles out.

Tips:

– I found that the easiest way to color the fondant was to add the coloring into the melted marshmallows, using a fork, BEFORE mixing in the powdered sugar. Less muscle power is needed doing it this way! I used the Wilton gel coloring.

– It is advisable to put in cake supports to keep the cake from leaning; the cake got pretty heavy with all of the fondant on top.

– A round pizza cutter is much better than any fancy tool for cutting out the fondant stripes.

– use only a drop of water to glue the fondant strips onto the fondant covered cake

– do not refrigerate marshmallow fondant! It can mess it up.

Everyone loved the cake and thought it tasted great. Hope this helps!

  1. Just wanted to say thank you so much for putting how to make the easy fondant. This is going to be my first attempt at using fondant. I am going to make a few cakes before hand to make sure I have down making and using it pretty well. My 4 year old has a birthday the end of August and wants a curious George cake. I hope I can get it down well enough to make a really cool cake for him.
