Coolest Custom Les Paul Guitar Cake

A good friend wanted a custom Gibson Les Paul guitar cake for his birthday, full-size, and fully to scale! So I recruited a mutual friend who plays guitar and knows his stuff to help! I baked the cakes the day before, and refrigerated for easy cutting.

My friend went to a local music store and traced their Les Paul to get the exact silhouette. I took black licorice strings and “painted” them with edible silver dust. We formed the pickups, bridge, stop tail, and tuning pegs out of fondant and “painted” with the edible gold dust. We had a hard time getting the right finish, especially in black, when we tried the spray on color. We ended up getting the gel color used to color frosting and literally painted it straight on without diluting with a craft sponge brush!

It was our first time using fondant ever, and I was so nervous! Ended up being super easy to work with.
