Homemade Darth Maul Birthday Cake
I made this Homemade Darth Maul Birthday Cake for my friend's 4 year old son's birthday party, it wasn't my idea. They said he loved Darth Maul. The shoulders are made of chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream filling. The head is layers of vanilla sponge with vanilla butter cream filling.
I used a 3/4" pipe flange bolted to the cake board with a pvc pipe threaded into for the support system. Once the cake was assembled I used vanilla butter cream icing as a crumb coat. I used modeling chocolate to form the expressions on the face, I also cut out the eye sockets and laid white fondant in it. The eyeballs are also white fondant that I put in place before covering the head in fondant. For the teeth I put a strip of white fondant around the mouth area.
I used red fondant to cover the head, then I airbrush with red edible paint for a even look. Once the paint dried I cut out the openings for the eyes and the mouth. The horns were made from modeling chocolate and hand painted for final touches. Everything else was finished by hand, painted with edible paint.
