Cool Homemade Diaper Cake From Real Cake

I used 3 x 20cm chocolate mud cakes, though, any cake can be used but it must be able to support the fondant. I trimmed the cakes flat and layed them on top of each other. I filled any gaps using fondant. I used about 3kgs in all.

Once the gaps were filled, I covered the cakes with a sugar syrup, though, you can used warm, strained apricot jam. The fondant needs to be rolled out large enough to cover the cake. Once covered, I use my hands to make even indents which represent the nappies sitting on top of each other. Once happy with that I take the blunt side of a butter knife and ‘cut’ in the “nappy folds” gently.

I brushed the cake over with some lightly beaten egg white and sprinkled desiccated coconut all over, which looks like toweling material.

I tucked some ribbon under the edges and tied off on top.

This baby’s sex is a surprise so I went with a funky but neutral ribbon. There are great ribbons available to use. I got 3 meters and trimmed the edges so it wouldn’t fray.
