Coolest Dino Cake

My son Jaden (4) has been all about Dino’s. I told him I would try to make a Dino cake for his class but that I was not sure if I could do it.

This was my first time making a 3D cake. I looked at some of the other pictures and directions on this site to get an idea of what I liked and how to do it.

It took two tries to get the cake right but in the end I was happy with it. On my first attempt the head was in the air (as they are in some of the other cakes on this site) however the head fell off over night so we kept that cake home.

Later in the week I decided to try again but this time I kept the head lower to the surface vs. up in the air and knock on wood this one stayed together and Jaden’s pre-k class loved it.

I used 2 9″ round pans. I cut one cake in half and using icing frosted them together for the body. Using the 2nd cake I cut out what I thought would look like legs and a head using icing to hold the pieces together. Once assembled I used a star tip and piped orange and green frosting throughout the cake. I also cut triangles from sugar sheets and used them for spikes; the finger nails were chocolate chips; and the eyes were candy eyes purchased at Wal-Mart.
