Homemade Dog Gone Cake

Homemade Dog Gone Cake

I made this dog cake for a friend's going away party. She was going to be a dog trainer, hence the dog dish, bone (or dog bed), paw prints and fire hydrant.

I used a basic buttercream for the frosting. For the fire hydrant/dog dish and bone I used a Marshmallow fondant recipe I found on the internet and then used food coloring for the red and green. The fondant, even though it was super easy to make it was difficult getting the color I wanted. I'm not too experienced with fondant so I'm sure there was probably an easier way of doing it. I just haven't found the way to do it yet. I felt like a kid playing with Playdough. I will say that at the end of the fondant, my hands were baby soft.

I couldn't find anything that looked like a paw print at the local baking supply stores so for the paw prints, I used York Peppermint patties and Junior mints.

Finally, I bought some "the dog" rings and put them on the sides of the cake. The rings are little dog houses with pictures of different dogs.

WOW! You got talent! I thought the fire hydrant & doggie dish were toys... 'til I read the rest of the story... they're actually marshmallows! YUM!
