Homemade Dolphin Birthday Cake
I made this cake for my niece's 10th birthday. She is crazy about dolphins and asked her mom for a homemade dolphin birthday cake for her party.
I started with four 9x13 cakes (two yellow, two chocolate). I iced it with blue buttercream and chocolate frosting. I made sand with vanilla wafer crumbs and granulated sugar (I thought graham crackers made sand that was too dark).
The dolphins, girl (my niece), fish and bucket are made from fondant. The pier is chocolate covered pretzels. I stood the girl up with toothpicks and the jumping dolphin with a plastic party skewer (I found a blue sparkly one that blended in better than a bamboo skewer). The dolphins around the edge of the cake are candy melts, tinted gray and poured into a mold I found at a cake supply store. The letters on the cake are also candy melts poured in a mold, then covered in the darker "sand" from graham cracker crumbs. The best part was surprising "the dolphin lover (TDL)" at her party with her special cake.
