Colorful Homemade Dolphin Cake

This Dolphin Cake was my (twin) son’s second birthday cake. My husband and I usually put in a lot of effort into these cakes! The dolphin was my husbands’ artwork, while I was attending to the butterfly.

I usually use Nigella’s buttermilk cake recipe. It is moist and sturdy – perfect for cutting out. I always use gel of powder colouring, it gives a much better colour.

Like with my other cakes I design, print and laminate a picture which I stick to a thick board. In this case I’ve added some laminated shells and fishes and stuck them to some asetate to give a 3D effect.

  1. I would never have thought of laminating a background for your cake to sit on. What a fantastic idea!!!!I think this cake is lovely, you can certainly see how much work went into it.
