Coolest Double Guitar Birthday Cake

I got most of the ideas for this Double Guitar Birthday Cake from this site and Howdini.com. My son picked the guitar he liked and I made a template based on that. I made sure I could get all the pieces out of the pan I used and adjusted things to be as big as they could and still use only one cake. I used a lasagna pan because it was the biggest pan I had. I made two cakes and just cut the second one out with the template turned upside down.

The plan was to have a dark blue and light blue guitar, and then put the opposite colour where the white is, but I couldn’t make the dark blue dark enough. I used shoelace licorice for the strings, mike and ikes and gum drops. The necks are chocolate icing that I tried to make as dark as possible.

I made two guitars because I was afraid one would not be enough. We ate the left cake at the kids party and then I was able to touch up the cake on the right for the family party the next day. I took the writing off and wrote it again where the left cake had been. The cake is sitting on a piece of plywood covered in tin foil, so the icing cleaned off nicely with a warm washcloth when I was prepping for the second party.

If I were doing it again, I think I would use fondant to get a really smooth finish. Either way, it was fun and it was what my son wanted. I love this site. I’m already using it for ideas for next year!
