Coolest Down on the Farm Cake

I made this Down on the farm cake for my son’s 1st birthday. We made 4 – 9″ square cakes and stacked 3 of them up for the barn, then some smaller pieces for the roof area. The silo was made by cutting the cake into circles using a cookie cutter. We took a long serrated knife to cut the roof angles together. We also chiseled out a little bit where the window is so that the bird could sit in there.

We then frosted the whole thing and decorated it to look like a barn. TIP: If you want red icing, tint it the day before. It takes a LOT of food coloring, but it gets darker the longer it sits, so to make sure you don’t have a pink barn, color your icing a day before. The grass was made with a grass tip, just in a few places to make it stand up. I also used some yellow icing with a small round tip to make the hay that is sticking out of the window.

We then used PlayMobil farm animals and farmer and such to help the scene.
