Homemade Dr. Seuss 1st Birthday Cake Design

I made this Dr. Seuss 1st Birthday Cake Design for my nephew's 7th birthday. This was only the third time I worked with fondant so I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

The books are two 13 x 9 funfetti cakes. I used two boxes for each cake. I covered them separately and then stacked them. I iced the "pages" after stacked. I hand painted the cover of the book using gel coloring mixed with water. The tiers are 10, 8, and 6 in. Two cakes per tier. I added pudding and extra eggs to the cakes to make them a little more dense so they will hold up to the carving and moving. I was worried about this making them dry, but they tasted very good.

I also froze the cakes before carving. I used three batches of homemade MM fondant and two batches of hm buttercream icing (with plenty left over). Polka dots are gumpaste. Green eggs and ham are fondant. The cake was a huge hit!

Tips (I learned the hard way): Use plenty of cornstarch when rolling your fondant so it doesn't stick. Use a dry brush to brush it off after on your cake. Once you place the fondant on the cake don't put it back in the fridge. When you take it out the change in temp will cause it to sweat. If you make your icing ahead of time, make sure you mix it again before you use it or it will be runny.

I wanted to know if u ended up using dowEl rods or not for the tiers and if u had to separate them with card board of any kind? Also, how many extra eggs per box?I'm trying to decide how difficult this will be to make for my sons first bday!

Thanks,
Lynda
