Homemade Dr. Seuss Birthday Cake

Homemade Dr. Seuss Birthday Cake

My son wanted a Dr. Seuss theme for his 6th birthday. After searching for ideas, I came across the topsy-turvy homemade Dr. Seuss birthday cake. It was perfect since it was so imperfect! This was my first attempt at making one, and I was pleasantly surprised at how it came out!

The bottom tier are 8" and 9" cakes, and the top tier are 4, 5, and 6" cakes. They are stacked smallest to largest with buttercream frosting in between each layer. I put mine in the freezer for a few minutes to firm up so that carving them would be easier.

The cake is frosted with buttercream, and I used pre-made fondant for the stripes, circles, and balls (I wouldn't recommend eating it - it tastes horrible!) I made the hat out of card-stock.

This cake is beautiful! I am going to attempt a version this month for my son's 1st birthday.

Can you please tell me what size cake pans you used and how many layers is in each tier? Thanks SO much!

How did you stack the cakes on top of each other? Did you decorate them first or stack them and then decorate?

Your cake is really cool but if it was my son i would want something to eat so do you have any other ideas that would make it taste good?
By the way would it be a good idea to make the hat out of cake or would that not work very well?

Fondant
by: Anonymous

The fondant comes of pretty easily, and that the part that does not taste good, it's not bad, it's edible, and has some sugar added to it. I had it on my wedding cake, and if you don't know what to do with it, people just ate it.

stacking

Sorry I don't get on this site often! :) It's a total illusion that makes the cakes look "crooked." Each cakes is totally level. Before I stacked the second tier, I actually cut down into the bottom layer of the cake. I used the smaller cake pan for a guide. So, the side of the bottom tier that is taller, I had to cut down a little further into. I ended up removing a circle shaped wedge from the bottom tier. Once that was done, I put in 4-5 cake dowels for support, then added the second tier (already decorated) to the top. The whole cake is buttercream frosting, except for the little balls, and the red stripes. The hat on top is just something I drew up that morning. :) Hope this helps anyone! :)

I actually drew the hat on a piece of cardstock the morning of his party. I taped 2 toothpicks to the back of it so that I had a way of sticking it to the cake. :)

Incredible Cake

Just wondered how you made the colored balls that go around the cake? Are these made out of fondant or are they made with modeling chocolate? Again the whole cake is incredible.
