Homemade Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat Cake

These are two cakes I made for a Dr. Seuss celebration at the local library. The star is obviously an easy star-shaped pan. I made the hat cake our of a flat sheet cake since I didn't want to bake 4 or 5 tiers and was too intimidated to go for the dowels etc. on the tall hat cakes.

This was actually very easy to do. I just cut away some of the flat sheet cake to make the hat look a little floppy and lop-sided. Then just colored half the icing red and did the stripes in alternating colors. Last I used black gel icing to outline the stripes and hat and give it that "cartoon" look.
