Drum Cake

Drum Cake

My son, Sam, loves music and wanted a drum cake for his 4th birthday. He also wanted an orchestra on top! Since it was his 4th birthday, I told him I'd make an instrument for each year of his life.

The cakes are homemade butter layer cakes covered in buttercream and then in rolled fondant. I used more fondant to create the rims and the details are molded fondant and spaghetti painted black. Edible gold dust was painted on for realistic detail.

The tops of the drums are painted with clear luster dust. The instruments are molded, painted gumpaste. The drumsticks are also gumpaste, marbled brown and molded and the Happy Birthday sign is rolled fondant written on with edible marker.

Awesome Cake!!
by: Dixie

I plan to make a cake similar to yours for my son's 15th bday this weekend, he is a drummer/percussionist in his school's marching band. They are doing a car show this weekend and I wanted to make a cake that reflected his interest. You did an awesome job. Just have a couple of questions. Did you use regular liquid food color or is it the gel food coloring? Also you said you used "spaghetti noodles", is this the long noodles or elbow noodles?

Thank you so much for posting these beautiful pictures. You are definitely a gifted artist. I am going to use this for a Women's banquet themed on Christmas movies. My table is "The little drummer boy".

Also my son is a drummer and this will be perfect for his 18th birthday. Wish youlived in TN so I could have you make one for me.

The spaghetti used is uncooked, to hold shape and be able to be covered with fondant. I cant ship any of my cakes, but I can drive them anywhere within reasonable distance from Maryland. This was such a fun challenge to make and still one of my son's favorite cakes 3 years later!

Your cake is awesome. I want to make a cake for my son's 17th birthday. He is in a Drum Corps. and
plays snare. I hope when I try to make him a snare drum cake that it will turn out as beautiful as yours did. I am not a baker but I am going to try. Any tips?

The fondant was actually hand painted with food coloring and water. The colors wouldn't have been as intense if I had mixed them into the fondant - and it gave it a nice natural sheen!

The clips were made from molded gumpaste and spaghetti that I painted with edible gold dust and vodka, and in the other cake, black food coloring. This is still his favorite cake. The best part was when he ate the drumsticks and got looks from people who assumed they were real :)

The cake is beautiful!!! How did you color the fondant on the sides of the cake? Also, what are the clips made of?
