Coolest Earth Day Cake

This Earth Day cake may not be geographically correct but it was fun, yummy and educational. The mold used was a sports ball mold you can purchased at any craft store. I used 1 1/2 cans of store bought vanilla frosting, 3/4 for the outside dyed blue, 1/4 dyed green for the continents and half for the middle layer which is dyed red for the magma.

The cake mix I used was funfetti, reduce the oil to 1 tablespoon to make a firmer cake( you can throw in mini-chips or leftover sprinkles for the same effect) the sprinkles are supposed to represent rocks and minerals in the earth, the red frosting is to represent the magma.

You begin by frosting the middle layer with the red and put the two halves together. (TIP: After frosting each step, put it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to set up or the cake will slide apart and the outside frosting will blend together.)

After the cake is set , frost the outside layer in blue and swirl to give an ocean effect, set again then proceed wit the green continents. The final step is using large marshmallows you pull apart and stretch for the clouds.

My kids loved it and they are excited to see when you cut into it, it is not plain cake, it is decorated and they learn about the inside of the earth. This was a fun celebration of earth.

  2. What a clever idea! I bet not too many people thought of doing a cake to celebrate Earth Day. Very unique! I especially like the middle part with the “magma” and the “rocks.” Good Job!

  3. Great Idea, I’m doing mine for a science project but instead I used red velvet to count as the magma and everything else you did but your idea seems more fun.
