Homemade Easter Egg Cake

I started off making two cakes for this Easter Egg cake. One was a sheet cake with 11 cups of cake mix (almost two boxes worth, make the full box and measure what is needed) and then the second cake I used the top of my small roasting pan so that it would look oval like an egg. This time I choose to use a yellow cake mix and a chocolate cake mix.

Then I started making lots of butter cream frosting and then tinted it for different shades of things I wanted. For the egg decorations, I used pink, blue, yellow, purple and orange. All tinted with the Wilton Icing colors paste. The grass color was made up using yellow and blue mixed with a very small amount of red. The basket weave was supposed to be more brown, but I couldn't quite get it right.

When my cakes cooled and the frosting was made, I placed my sheet cake on a large wooden cutting board I had. I put waxed paper under the edges so that the frosting wouldn't get all over the wood as I decorated. Then, I did a crumb coat of butter cream frosting. Once that was done, I started making the grass. In hindsight, I would have made the grass after I had finished the egg and the basket weave on the sides.

I frosted the egg with a crumb coat of butter cream frosting and then I placed it in the middle of the sheet cake. I just randomly chose tips to make different patterns and shapes and then filled in the white spots with tip #18 or #27.

For the basket weave, I used tip # 47 and it helped to raise my cake up onto something stable to frost the sides.

The grass was made using tip # 233 and it was easy and a lot of fun! I almost couldn't stop doing it!
