Homemade Elmo Birthday Cake
This 3D Elmo Birthday Cake was made of lemon cake for the body and legs, rice krispies for the head, eyes, nose and arms (to keep the cake from being too top-heavy). Elmo's miniature cake was made of chocolate layer ganache cake. The finished Elmo cake was approx. 18 inch in height.
Shape the cake with serrated knife to get desired shape. Layer the cakes and add buttercream icing in between layers. Make sure stacked cake layers are even and sturdy. Use plastic straw or wood skewers pierced through the middle of the cake from top to bottom to give support and keep cake from sliding.
Coloured fondant is used to cover and decorate the miniature cake, Elmo's eyes and nose. Buttercream icing tinted with red food colouring was used with a large star tip and piped all over, from bottom of cake up, to create the layered furry effect.
To get the deep red colour, you will need to make and colour the buttercream icing 1-2 days prior and stored in the fridge to let the colour develop.
