Adorable Homemade Elmo Sheet Cake

My son’s school was having a year end party and many of the kids really like Elmo. I searched and found an appropriate picture for the cake top and made the Elmo cake. The cake is an 11X15 double layer marble cake. I always use the Dr. Oetker cake mixes for my cake because they are much more dense and don’t crumble when you ice them. The denser mixes are also better to use when you have to work with larger cakes. This particular cake took 4 cake mixes, 2 chocolate and 2 white.

I used the Wilton 11X15 cake pan and made sure to grease the pan really well with Crisco and dusted it with flour as well. If you don’t spend the time to do this then your cake will not come out of the pan in one piece! Bake the cake as per the instructions! I leveled the cake and stacked them with pudding in the middle, then crumb coated them. Ice the cake generously and smooth out the icing as well as you can.

For drawing the designs on the cake I practiced the drawing at least twice to make sure I can get it right. For all of my icing I used the Wilton recipe for pure white icing. Experimenting with consistencies will help determine how soft you want your icing! For drawing on the cake I used a thinner icing because it flows so nicely.

For drawing Elmo I drew in the body shape then filled in the spaces, I experimented with different piping tip to get the right fuzzy effect for Elmo. Have fun with icing the cake!

The kids loved the cake!
