Fairy Scene Cake

Fairy Scene Cake

I made this fairy scene cake for my nieces 3rd birthday. It was her request to have a "Tinkerbell Cake". I looked online and at this site, took the ideas and then went from there.

I made the mushrooms with meringue sprinkled with cocoa powder. I made them the day before I made the cake. The stems and mushroom tops were piped separately, and then joined with melted chocolate once they had been cooled. I used a basic meringue recipe.

For the cake I used 2 vanilla box cake mixes and baked them in a large round bowl. It took about 2 hours of baking for a Wooden skewer to come clean. It is important that the cake is cooked completely before taking it out of the oven, otherwise it will shrink in the middle.

I put the mound on a 9X13 cake board and covered with foil. I then iced a crumb coat of chocolate buttercream icing (dirt layer). I piped grass with Wilton tip #233 to give individual blades of grass effect. I made the icing myself so that I would have the right consistency for piping. I used gel colouring Kelly Green with a touch of Teal to make the icing colour.

Once I got the cake to the party I placed Tinkerbell and her fairy friends on the cake.
