Homemade Farmyard Cake

This farmyard cake is a beautifully moist mud cake with a chocolate muddy looking ganache icing. The farm animals were made from a plain modeling fondant coloured to suit each piece.

I created the barn house out of red fondant and added some raffia for straw. There is a little grey rat with a pink tail. My older ensured me we needed a rat coming from the barn. My fences were made rolled out fondant sliced into fence pailings and binded together by florist wire.

I rolled and cut grass from green fondant. I spent a lot of time practicing with the fondant making the animals. It is really quite easy with a little practice. It's like playing with playdoh.

This cake was for my son Tom's 1st Birthday. It was a real achievement. It was exactly how I had planned and I was really pleased. I had so many admiring comments. It was worth every late night making the animals.
