Homemade Fire Engine Cake

My son is a fire engine fanatic! After looking around a little on the internet, I found this amazing site. I combined a few ideas and got his input as well.

The fire engine cake is actually one large 13x9 cake that I refrigerated (to cut easier later). I split it down the middle and also cut off about 4 inches on the end. I put the split long cake pieces together by putting them on their skinny sides and the extra 4 inches were put on top to help create the cab.

I iced the whole thing red and then piped in most of the details. I added the black licorice for the sides and Oreos for the tires. I also used gum drops for the lights. The white around the bottom gives it an "off the ground" feel.

The whole cake took me a good 4 hours because of all of the detail with the piping, but it was well worth it. He loved it!
