Homemade Firetruck Cake

I made this firetruck cake for my grandson, Hank's, 4th birthday last year. While I made a 1/2 sheet cake, it was way too big and I could have gotten by with a 9 X 12 (1/4 sheet), so I would make that change next time.

I pieced the cake together, and had to stack some layers for height, with icing in between. It took 3 or 4 tubs of the red no taste gel to get this deep red color. I used Oreos for the wheels and then frosted over them, gum drops and M & Ms to garnish.

The windows and the fire medallion were made with fondant. I piped in the ladder. As I was giving my grandson a Lego fire set for his birthday present, I went ahead and took the hatchets, the dog, the hydrant, etc. and placed them on the cake for effect. The cake wasn't lined up just right, so I ended up piping it in gray to try to establish some lines. I used Viva paper towels to smooth out the icing.

Hank loved it and other mommies there tried to place orders!

I am just curious if you have a picture of the front of the cake. This is really cute!
