Coolest First Birthday Cake and Smash Cake

I was inspired to make this Homemade First Birthday Cake and Smash Cake from looking at others on this website, and I got a lot of useful tips from here and elsewhere on the internet. As suggested by another parent, I made two 9X13 sheet cakes (chocolate for the bottom, white for the top) and froze them overnight. I did level the chocolate one before freezing, and took part of the top of the white one off, as well (although I didn’t get it quite level!).

The following evening, I used a bit of frosting to put the two layers together and then cut them into the shape of a “1.” I actually did draw my outline on parchment paper beforehand and used that to guide my cuts. I used part of what I cut off to put together for my son’s smash cake (again, using frosting to hold it together). I then frosted with an initial “crumb coat” layer of white frosting and froze that overnight. (I wasn’t quite sure about freezing twice, but I wanted to be sure the crumb coat was firm and it worked out just fine.)

The last evening I added the final layer and decorated the cake. I had already purchased the napkins and candle with the “dot” theme, so I bought some confetti dots to complete the look. It was a hit!

  1. Really cute idea! I think I’m going to try this for my sons first birthday. I was wondering what tool use used to make the edging around the bottom of the cake?
