Homemade Fish Cake
For this homemade fish cake I started with a 9”x13” one layer cake. I enlarged a picture of a fish I found on the internet and traced the shape onto the cake, then cut it out. I rounded out the edges a bit and tapered the tail.
I applied a thin layer of buttercream and then covered the cake in gray fondant. I made the gill impressions with my small round fondant cutter, careful to lay it slightly on its side to make the crescent shape.
I cut fins out of fondant and attached them to the cake board and to the fish with royal glue (1tsp. meringue powder mixed with 1 tsp. water – this is my preferred method of attaching fondant to fondant).
I made the lines in the fins with my veining tool. I then painted the cake with luster dust (one that was silver with a slight greenish tint, I believe it was called “silver foliage”) mixed with vodka.
The mouth was made from a thin string of fondant. The eye is white fondant painted with black icing colour. The hook is gray fondant painted with luster dust. The worm is fondant as well.
