Homemade Flower Pot Birthday Cake

My little girl was invited to a nature themed birthday party and I thought it would be nice to make a Flower Pot Birthday Cake for her as a birthday gift and decided to go with flowers.

I made the pot using the Wilton cake pan for doll cakes and trimmed it to get the desired shape. It helps if you chill the sponge first to minimize crumbs. I coloured some white fondant with orange and brown to get the terracotta colour.

I baked some cupcakes and covered with cut out flowers and covered some lengths of dowel in green fondant adding leaves and making a small incision in the bottom of each cupcake and plugging with fondant to help the stems to stay in place. Finally I covered the pot at the base of the flowers with broken chocolate curls to give the effect of soil.

I got the idea for the flowers from this great site.
