Coolest Flying into 1st Grade Airplane Cake

I made this airplane cake for my son for his kindergarten graduation. I wanted to do something special for him and practice some of my techniques in the process.  Graduating from kindergarten is a big deal and so is he so I looked for a long time before I decided on the airplane. This was probably one of the easiest cakes I’ve made and didn’t take much time at all to make.

The cake is made from extra pieces of cake that I had left over from other cakes that I had made. I get the misc. pieces in the freezer because I just knew I would be able to find a use for them and I did!  It is made of three pieces of cake formed into a cross. I covered the chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream icing and then covered it in yellow fondant. I made the tail fin, windshield,  and propeller from yellow fondant and used an edible marker to create the details. I also used a piece of yellow/green fondant to make the flag that says “Soaring into 1st Grade”  I used the same green edible marker to write the words.  The clouds are made with white butter cream icing.

My son loved it, (even thought it wasn’t my best work-he didn’t notice).  It was just the right size for our little family celebration and was very tasty.
