Homemade Football Birthday Cake

My son is in love with football, so we decided to take a sneak peak of some ideas here for a Football Birthday Cake, and use them into a "2 year old" cake for him. We loved the "asteroid football" idea, so we made a half sheet cake (takes three cake mixes) then frosted the 'turf' with green frosting (white buttercream colored with Wilton forest green). Then we added a bit of dyed green coconut for the grass, to give it texture.

For the football, I baked a cake in the Pampered Chef Batter Bowl and then rounded the edges to shape the football, once cooled (if you freeze it first, it is easier to cut). Then fudge-frosted it and piped on laces. I dug around the football to look like it smashed into the grass, using crushed Oreos.

It turned out really nice!
